Japanese Culture Workshops at the Consulate
(November 9 and 16, 2011)

Ikebana Class
Over two Wednesdays the Information Center held cultural activity workshops at the Consulate offices. Ms. Elaine Jo, an Ikebana instructor and the proprietor of Washi Accents, delivered two workshops on November 9 and 16. Over 20 participants came on the two days for lunchtime classes in ikebana and chigiri-e.
Ms. Jo, along with her assistant, guided participants through a simple flower arrangement in a bamboo container after giving them an overview of the art form’s history and development. Participants were taught the significance of the shapes and presentation, as well as practical tips for transporting and displaying their arrangements. In the chigiri-e class, participants created a floral design on a paper fan, as the importance of layering and composition were demonstrated to the class.
