Lecture Series by Japanese Photography Critic Mr. Kotaro Iizawa
The Consulate General of Japan in cooperation with the Japan Foundation welcomed renowned Japanese photography critic Mr. Kotaro Iizawa. He curated the photography exhibit “Tohoku – Through the Eyes of Japanese Photographers” (Japan Foundation Traveling Exhibition) which was held at the Rosa Parks Museum in Montgomery, AL, from March 3-31. During his stay here, he gave lectures in Georgia and Alabama about the exhibit.
On March 18 and 19, Mr. Iizawa gave lectures about the photography exhibition to university students and the general public at Emory University (Atlanta, GA) and students in the Japanese program at Auburn University (Auburn, AL), respectively. In the lectures, he explained the photographs in the exhibit, the photographers, and the message which the photographers hoped to convey through their photographs. Through his explanation of the exhibit he introduced the unique culture and history of the Tohoku region of Japan.
Mr. Iizawa conducted a Gallery Talk on March 19 at the Rosa Parks Museum where he explained the scenery depicted in the photos as well as the stories behind them, and he exchanged views about the photographs with those in attendance. Through this event, visitors were given the opportunity to deepen their knowledge about Tohoku as well as the photographs and photographers in this exhibition.
