CG Sunaga attends Boy and Girl Scouts of America 10th Annual Merit Badge University (October 26, 2013)
On October 26, CG Sunaga, Mrs. Sunaga, and the Official Chef, Mr. Murakami attended the 10th Annual Merit Badge University for the Boy and Girl Scouts of America held at Kennesaw State University. CG Sunaga gave a lecture and Chef Murakami performed a cooking demonstration.
The 10th Annual Merit Badge University event hosted about 1,500 people, scouts and their parents, from 8 states. The participants were divided into about 70 classes which covered topics such as International Relations, Culture, Sports, etc. Local congressman Dr. Tom Price was in attendance along with Kennesaw State University affiliates and the participating Boy and Girl Scouts.
CG Sunaga said a few words at the opening ceremony and gave a lecture at the “Citizenship in the World” class focusing on Japanese politics, economy (including the energy situation after the earthquake disaster), US-Japan relations (US-Japan Security Council, TPP, etc) and the United Nations (CG Sunaga’s experience working for the United Nations as well as the current status of the United Nations Security Council Resolution). The roughly 60 participants (mainly 12-18 year old students) asked questions regarding Japan’s opinion of the US NSA Activity, the reasoning behind Japan’s declining birthrate, the declining yen rate, the biggest difference between the US and Japanese Governments, and the differences between American families and Japanese families.
Following the lecture, CG Sunaga gave a brief explanation of Japanese cuisine using displays of plastic models of Japanese food. Chef Murakami then gave a demonstration of how to make “Okonomiyaki,” a popular Japanese meal.
