Holiday Hartsfield Jackson Airport
1. The Consulate-General of Japan in Atlanta, as well as other nations’ Consulates-General, participated in “Holiday Hartsfield-Jackson Airport,” a Christmas celebration held at the Delta Heritage Museum inside Delta Airlines’ premises.
2. Inside the Delta Heritage Museum is the “Spirit of Delta,” a legendary Boeing 767. Its story follows....
In the 1980’s, under pressure from a hard recession and suddenly rising fuel costs, the airline industry was in trouble. Delta, then an aircraft rental company, was no exception, as one by one their rental planes were reduced. At that time, one Delta employee came forward and told the company, “It’s my fault that Delta is on the verge of bankruptcy; if only I had provided better service for our customers, they wouldn’t be leaving us. Please use my salary instead of paying me.” As other employees heard the story, they began to do the same, until finally the employees presented a Boeing 767 to the company. That aircraft is the same “Spirit of Delta” that sits in the museum.
3. 300 students from Atlanta City Schools attended the event, where they enjoyed magic trick performances, Christmas songs sung by high school chorus groups, and getting their pictures taken with Santa. 4. Among the attractions, celebrations of the holidays around the world were presented by the Consulates of Germany, Canada, Mexico, and Japan. For Japan, children could see pictures of student life in Japan and cartoon pictures, and a world map showing Japan’s location. There was also an explanation of how elementary school children in Japan led their daily lives. Each child got to fold origami, and each school was presented with a kokeshi doll set.
