On January 29, 2008, the Consulate General of Japan in Atlanta, with the cooperation of the Japan Foundation, the Nippon Taiko Federation, and the Japan-America Society of Georgia, sponsored a live performance by Fugaku Taiko, a traditional Japanese drumming ensemble, at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, Georgia.

Fugaku Taiko hails from the base of Mt. Fuji (“Fugaku” is literally “foot of Mt. Fuji”), and is one of over 800 Taiko performance groups sponsored by the Nippon Taiko Foundation. Fugaku Taiko was also the first member group of the Nippon Taiko Foundation to perform in the Southeastern United States. The group was founded in 1977, and annually make over 100 performances in Japan and abroad. Roughly a dozen members came this particular night to perform in Atlanta.

The night's performance was attended by an audience of over 1000 people, packing Gaines Chapel in Presser Hall of Agnes Scott to overflowing. All of the songs were composed by the members of the performance group, original works that would vary in tempo, rhythm, and tone from one to the next. The visual aspects were as impressive as the aural aspects, for that matter; massive drums, colorful costumes, and large props such as dancing dragons ensured that the show never faltered or fell into a rut.
