Ceramic Hakata Doll Painting Demo (June 8) and Workshop (June 9) by Master Artists from Fukuoka
Hakata dolls, named after the Fukuoka region of Japan, where "I Wish" was filmed, are unglazed ceramic dolls that date from the 17th century. Hakata dolls are distinctive in that they are made of clay rather than kaolin, as is typical with western porcelain dolls, and are fired at a lower temperature than porcelain. As a result, the surface of porcelain dolls is sharp and glassy, while the surface of Hakata dolls is soft and unglazed. Another difference is the painting method. While porcelain dolls are fired for glazing after they have been painted, Hakata dolls are not fired.
