Hogaku Music Performance at the University of Georgia
(January 15, 2010)

Pre-Performance Lecture by "Hogaku Journal" editor Takafumi Tanaka
A full house at the University of Georgia's Ramsey Recital Hall greeted the performance of "Hogaku: New Sounds of Japan 2010." The performance was the result of collaboration between The Japan Foundation, the University of Georgia's Center for Asian Studies, and the Consulate General of Japan in Atlanta.
The event began with a pre-concert lecture by the editor of Hogaku Journal, Mr. Takafumi Tanaka, who explained the origins of the various types of music in the program as the performers demonstrated. Following a brief intermission, the performance began in earnest, featuring three performing groups. Tsugukaji are a duo specializing in playing Koto, or Japanese zither. Oyama x Nitta performed on shamisen, specifically tsugaru-shamisen, a banjo-like instrument. Finally, percussionists HIDE & MIHO not only gave a musical performance, but included dance in their program as well. At the end, all of the performers played in ensemble to give the audience a special treat.
