皆様おはようございます。入学式にご招待いただき大変嬉しく思います。新入生の皆様ご入学おめでとうございます。
Good morning everyone. I am glad to be here today to congratulate the new students and welcome all of you to a new school year.
アメリカの学校は秋に始まりますが、日本は春です。春には桜が咲きます。日本では桜の花が新しい生活の始まりを告げるのです。アトランタの気候は日本に似ているので皆さんの新しい生活も桜と共に始まりました。
In the United States, the school year begins in autumn, but in Japan, the school year begins in spring, just as the cherry trees are blossoming. The opening of the cherry blossoms signals to us that it is a time of new beginnings. Luckily, the climate here in Atlanta is similar to Japan, and you can also start a new year when the cherry trees are in bloom.
桜の花は古くから日本の象徴です。127年前にエリザ・シドモアさんという女性が日本を訪問して桜に出会い、アメリカに持ってきたいと思ったそうです。けれども、実際に桜を持ってくるには27年間もかかり、ようやく1912年に3000本の桜が日本から送られました。今から100年前のことです。100年前の3月27日、アメリカの大統領と日本の大使の奥様が最初の2本をワシントンDCで植樹しました。今では毎年アメリカで桜が花開くのを見て日本とアメリカの良い関係を思い起こすことができます。
The cherry blossom has been a symbol of Japan for many centuries. 127 years ago, a woman named Eliza Scidmore visited Japan and was so impressed with the cherry trees she saw there that she decided she wanted to bring them to America. It took her over 27 years, but finally in 1912 she realized her dream. Japan sent 3,000 cherry trees to the United States. One hundred years ago, in a ceremony on March 27, the wife of the president of the United States and the wife of the Japanese ambassador planted the first two of these trees in Washington, DC. Every spring, we are reminded of the good relationship between Japan and the United States when these trees bloom.
新入生の皆さんはたくさんの夢を持っていることでしょう。けれども、時には自信をなくして、夢を叶えることはできないのではないかと思うこともあるかもしれません。そのときはシドモアさんのことを思い起こしてください。彼女は何度も困難に出会いながら夢をあきらめずに桜の花をアメリカに持ってきてくれました。皆さんもこの学校で大きな夢を持ってください。そして最初はうまくいかなくてもあきらめずに夢がかなうよう努力してみてください。皆さんの大好きなミッキーマウスを創作したウォルト・デイズニーも「夢みることさえできれば、それを成し遂げることができる。」と言いました。皆さんも先ず夢を持ってみてください。
I am sure you are full of dreams for the future. But maybe you sometimes feel discouraged and think, “I am just one person. What can I do?” Surely Mrs. Scidmore felt discouraged many times when no one was interested in her dream. But she refused to give up, and finally her dream came true. As you begin a new school year, I encourage you to dream big and not be discouraged if you cannot accomplish your goals the first time you try. Walt Disney, the creator of Mickey Mouse, once said, “If you can dream it, you can do it.” I think this is good advice. Thank you.
