Stand Up Japan! A Special Exhibition
(November 16-17, 2011)
On Wednesday, November 16 and Thursday, November 17, the Consulate General of Japan, with the cooperation of the Japan-America Society of Georgia and the Japan External Trade Organization, presented a special exhibition, “Stand Strong Japan!” The exhibition was held to dispel baseless rumors about Tohoku and Japan as a whole, which have caused unnecessary financial hardship in an already soft world economy.
As part of the exhibition, Mr. Satoshi Tachibana, one of the few surviving makers of Japanese armor, displayed his works. In addition to exhibiting his armor, Mr. Tachibana also helped guests to actually wear parts of the armor, to the delight of many guests. Even now the armor he makes is used in the “Soma-Nomaoi” festival of Soma City in Fukushima Prefecture. Other exhibit items included Nambu Ironware, Iwayado and Sendai drawers, and Tohoku regional varieties of sake and Japanese food.
On Thursday, November 17, the father of JET participant Taylor Anderson came to speak to guests about his daughter’s work. Taylor was living in Ishinomaki City when the tsunami struck, and she was tragically swept away after she had ensured the safety of her students.
For this reception and exhibition, we received the support of not only local Japanese citizens but also the praises of many guests, and local media outlets such as Global Atlanta and the Georgia Asian Times. CNN was also on hand for interviews and coverage of the event. We would like to humbly thank everyone who supported this project.
